#ChangetheName of Morse Elementary
We, the members of Celebrating the African Spirit (CAS), have a personal connection with our community and its educational institutions. One such institution is currently named after Samuel F.B. Morse, where in the first half of his life, he lived in NYC, where he once ran on the anti-immigrant, anti-Catholic, antisemitic Nativist Party line for mayor. He lost and later moved to Poughkeepsie in the late 1840s. Additionally, he defended slavery in his 1860s treatise "An Argument on the Ethical Position of Slavery." This name does not reflect our values or those we wish to instill in our children.
We propose renaming this school to "North Star Elementary School." The North Star has been a symbol of guidance and hope throughout history and would encourage meaningful discussions among students about its significance. This name would eliminate disagreements over whose name should adorn the building while remaining credible for as long as the building exists.
The Poughkeepsie Board of Education has an opportunity here to make a powerful statement against racism and for education that truly reflects our diverse community's values. By changing this school's name, we can take one step towards rectifying past wrongs and creating an environment where all students feel valued.
Here is a link to CAS's full statement for changing Morse Elementary to North Star Elementary.
