“Oh, Freedom!” Quilting Project 2027

The Mid-Hudson Antislavery History Project allies with like-minded organizations to better understand and share the nature and consequences of slavery history in New York State and the surrounding area. MHAHP is part of the governing bodies of both the Underground Railroad Consortium of New York State (URCNYS) and the Northern Slavery Collective (NorSC). Together, Celebrating the African Spirit and MHAHP work on the commemoration of the upcoming 2027 Bicentennial of legal abolition in New York through partnering with CAS on the local Oh, Freedom! Project.

Quilting was a form of art enslaved Africans and African-Americans would hold designs that entailed stories and symbols of emancipation. The Oh Freedom! Quilting Project strives to collaborate community quilts to commemorate and memorialize the people and places in the Hudson Valley who were important in the historic fight for freedom and emancipation.
