On Recognizing the Enslaved Men and Women Who Built the Mill at Upper Landing

“Jack, Fortune, Frank, Francis, Toby, Jo, Dean, Susan, and Bett all worked here at the mill built at Upper Landing in 1755. They helped in the construction of a vital part of the Hudson Valley.

Let us remember them.

Let us remember their fine workmanship and their dedication to the task assigned to them.

It was their work that enabled the valley to grow and flourish.

Let us remember their names, for they formed a large segment of the backbone and hard work it took to create this beautiful place where tourists come each and every year to visit the estates and gardens, the construction sites and the remains of the industries which put the Hudson Valley on the map of prosperous areas in the country.

Say their names, remember them all and thank them.”
