“Hudson Valley Slavery” talks about the history and enduring consequences of slavery in Dutchess County
June 19, 2022
Longtime local civic rights activist Carman McGill and Professor Katie Hite of Vassar College, represent “Celebrating the African Spirit,” a non-profit agency whose goal is educating the local community about the robust functioning of slavery in the Hudson Valley – and how this history has been systemically eclipsed. One of their methods is to create physical memorials on the very spots where significant slavery events took place. They also announced that they are now accepting applications for their 2022 Youth Summer Program, in which students will learn about their local history in a five day per week program from June 30th to July 15th – as they earn a $200 stipend!
